2016: What's at stake
- During the next presidential term, three sitting justices will be in their 80’s.
- Every issue that is important to progressives will be impacted by the Supreme Court.
- The future of the Supreme Court hangs in the balance and the impact of this moment will be felt for generations.
This is a make or break moment for our rights and freedoms. Right now we’re at a crossroads. The death of Antonin Scalia has left a vacancy on the Court, and that’s just the beginning. There are three more justices who will be in their 80s during the next administration. The math here is simple: whomever those four new justices are will determine what the Constitution means for the rest of your life.
The very same special interests and individuals trying to buy our elections and take control of every other branch of government have been preparing for this moment. They use law schools, think tanks, lobbying groups, and right-wing media outlets to incubate radically conservative legal arguments and groom the right-wing ideologues who will implement them if appointed to the Supreme Court.
A court under the control of right-wing special interests will immediately begin to roll back the clock a hundred years - back to a time without marriage equality, access to abortion, healthcare reform, voting rights, or life saving regulation. We can’t afford to let that happen.
